Aspen Arch Tutorial
Planning a wedding can be overwhelming, especially when you’re dealing with all the details that come with it. From finding the perfect venue to picking out your dream bridal gown or tux, every little thing matters.
Adding a floral arch to your big day is one of those details that will truly add beauty and elevate your ceremony. If the thought of paying thousands for a professional florist and rental arch has been stressing you out - we’ve got some good news! You can totally create a gorgeous DIY floral wedding arch without breaking your budget.
In this blog post, we’ll break down everything you need to know about constructing a stunning arch so that neither time nor money stands in the way of making it exactly what you want! Bonus: we have a step-by-step video with the exact steps we used to create this stunning arch!
Materials Needed
If you're planning a DIY floral wedding arch, it's important to have all the right materials and tools on hand. For this project, you'll need:
- White Alstroemeria: 8-10 bunches (80-100 stems)
- Sweet for Love roses: 1-2 bunches (25-35 stems)
- Spray roses: 2 bunches (20 stems)
- Large foam cage: 1 cage
- Oshun Pouch: 1 pouch
- Bind wire: 1 spool is more than enough for the entire event
- Moxie Kit
- Aspen Arch
- Fabric for draping
Let's get started!
1. Assemble your arch. Have an electric drill handy, as the small screwdriver included won't be enough to secure the metal parts to the frame. Trust us on this one.
2. Soak. Immerse your floral foam and Oshun Pouch in water to hydrate. Your Oshun Pouch will puff up as it takes in water. Then attach both to your arch with zip ties. Be mindful of the liquid that will spill out of the Oshun Pouch. Protect the floors a arch from staining during this step as the water can become discolored.
3. Alstroemeria. Start with your white alstroemeria for your base. Vary the height and angle of each stem to create visual interest and multiple planes.
4. Add roses. Backfill with you Sweet for Love (or other standard) roses and spray roses.
5. Add fabric. Grab your fabric and helper. One person will stand on a step stool and the other on the ground to keep the fabric off of the ground. Start draping your fabric, taking care to avoid the flowers.
6. Secure fabric. Secure your fabric with the bind wire.
Color Combinations
Choosing the right color combinations for your wedding flowers is important, especially when it comes to the arch. The flowers for the arch are a focal point during the ceremony and will be captured in many of your wedding photos, so you want them to be visually appealing.
A popular color combination is peach and cream roses with green foliage. This combination creates a soft and romantic look that complements most wedding themes. Blush pink and white roses with eucalyptus is another combination that works well together. The blush pink adds a pop of color while the white and green give a fresh and ethereal feel. Here, we used a base of alstroemeria instead of traditional greenery, which serves to add a bit of greenery AND flowers at one time.
If your colors are on the dark and moody side, stay away from doing ALL dark colors. Instead, have light to medium colors mixed in to give the flowers variation. This will photograph much better than doing 100% dark flowers. Play around with different color combinations until you find one that speaks to you and your partner's personal style. With the right color combination, your wedding arch will not only be beautiful but will enhance the overall theme of your big day.
Tips and Tricks
There's no doubt that decorating your wedding with fresh flowers and foliage can add life and vibrancy to your event. And DIY-ing your flowers will save beaucoup dollars. One thing you don't want to do is to try to do this alone. Not only do two people make the process go by much faster, but it's always more fun to have someone to chat with while you work. And don't forget to have all of your supplies on hand and ready to go, like floral snips, a ladder or step stool, and towels to clean up any messes. Being prepared before you start will save you time and headaches down the line. So grab your favorite pal, gather your supplies, and let's get to decorating!
With these step-by-step instructions, color combinations, tips and tricks, and a video tutorial to follow along with you should now have the confidence and know how to create your own DIY floral wedding arch for the budget bride.
Don’t forget to be creative when it comes to bringing your own personal touch to the arrangement . Try using alstroemeria instead of greenery as the base for a floral-heavy but affordable look.
If you do this for your wedding, send photos so we can share with the world! Who knows, you might even inspire another bride or groom looking for some creative ideas for their dream wedding. So get creative and go wild - we can't wait to see what you come up with!
