Meet Cristen

Custom Design Team Lead / Identifies as Ranunculus

  • Started working at a flower shop at age 16
  • Handled first solo wedding at age 17 (wtf)
  • WORKED ON CHRIS HARRISON’S WEDDING !!!
  • Mother of 2, hell-bent on visiting all 50 states before graduation
  • Mastered a PTA balloon arch 100% sober
  • Enneagram 8 through and through––The Challenger
  • Will be honest about the good/bad/ugly of DIY but with plenty of hype
  • Not just an order taker, will come to the table with ideas!

You’d think someone with celebrity floral experience would be insufferable, but Cristen will just compliment your sweater and apologize 47x for appearing “frizzy.” Homegirl majored in Agriculture Education from Texas Tech, taught Floral Design for 15 years, and trained at the Benz School of Floral Design at Texas A&M University. So yeah, it’s always been about flowers.

Cristen can whip together a foam-free cascade bouquet in the dark but is endlessly patient with stressy beginners. Amy hired her on the caveat that she doesn’t come for her job.

What’s your favorite wedding you’ve designed and why did it stand out?

I've been lucky enough to design such beautiful high profile weddings but out of all those I would say my favorite would be a wedding in the fall at summer camp on the river in the Texas Hill country. It was a beautiful backdrop for a perfect wedding weekend. TONS of blue hydrangeas everywhere! All of the guest stayed at the camp and just had the best time. It was a beautiful elegant evening under a tent with a floral chalinder and flowers everywhere!

Describe your floral design style in 3 words

Classic, Textural. Lush

If you could invent a flower that doesn’t exist, what would it look like?

A hybrid of a ranunculus and scabiosa. They both have great texture and size, but are usually pretty delicate so a hardier version of those.

What floral trend do you secretly hope sticks around forever?

Hydrangeas. Tons on them! It's been around awhile and come back around. They just look so lush and beautiful.

What is one tool you’d never leave the studio without on wedding day?

Oasis Bind Wire!!! It can literally work miracles

What color palette will you never get tired of designing with?

White and green! Always beautiful!

Wedding day drink of choice:

Coke with lots of ice... Full Sugar and Caffeine!

What’s your biggest wedding mistake? Save some lives here.

Oh! This was terrible! Back when I was a high school floral design teacher one of the teachers from the school had me and some high school girls come to her house to set up florals for a very small wedding there.

His soon-to-be husband asked me to place the "cake topper" figurine on the top of the cake BUT the problem was it wasn't actually a cake topper but rather an entire porcelain collectors item. It was WAY to heavy for the cake, but I confidently demonstrated to my students have to place it on up there and a few seconds later it fell down and smeared the entire back of the cake and left the top section demolished!!

I tried to cover my mistake with flowers, but the damage was done! I ran those girls out to the van as fast as we could and reminded them that the florist should never touch the cake! Life lessons there!

What’s one thing you wish more people knew about florists?

Every task takes way more steps than just getting flowers and putting them in a vase! We think of every details and getting blooms from point A to point B is no easy task!

What’s your best piece of advice for a DIY bride?

Remember you are getting married that week so choose wisely what you want really have the manpower to handle! Your helpers make the biggest difference.

What’s one thing you’d go back in time and tell your past self on your wedding day?

Don't be a b*tch to the photographers when you feel like they are moving slowly..... my pictures turned out so bad!

What’s your favorite thing about working with DIY brides/couples?

I LOVE to see the results! It so fun to watch someones ideas go from their head to an actual true vision.

Your favorite snack on design days

I usually forget to bring snacks honestly, but I love to stop designing for a big lunch late in the day so I can sit the mess and see how much progress we have made in the day!

What’s the one thing all brides should do or have the day of their wedding?

Apply deodorant and then reapply again before the ceremony! It's a day full of nervous sweating!

Funniest/most embarrassing moment at a wedding (either yours or something you witnessed)

Most of the wedding I have witnessed have been picture perfect! The pastor at our church wedding did drop the rings right after praying over them during the ceremony. We awkwardly picked them up and carried on!

This is going to be amazing!!
