Lesson Six

Transport, Cleanup, and More

Lesson Overview

Goal: Know all the flower transportation tips and what to do with yer blooms at the end of the night.

Make it happen: On the actual wedding day, with an action plan in place and helpers assigned in advance. YOU don't need to be the one to execute. Enjoy your wedding day!

Breeze through this lesson: In under 10 minutes.

Your big day is here, your flowers are built, your heart is jacked, your pits are damp. YOU MADE IT!!!! Now it’s time to sit back, relax, and have everyone serve you.

Unless you’re having an evening wedding and want to help with logistics, we recommend that you pawn these tasks off to the groomsmen along with your best Type-A friend to backseat drive them.

Task: Haul the flowers

  • Assemble Helpers:A gaggle of groomsmen are great for this but you will need someone who’s officially IN CHARGE to make sure the flowers are dispersed accordingly in the bridal suite, on the tables, at the ceremony, etc.
    • Pre-Pack Flowers: Pack your flowers in boxes the night before so loading is quick and easy the next morning.
    • Flower Check List: Ensure everything is accounted for, ESPECIALLY those bouts and corsages that are in the fridge! As designers, we frequently forget about them. (Use your Course Workbook for this.)
    • Venue Diagram:  If your set-up or venue is complicated, having a little diagram will make your helpers' lives easier. Draw it on the back of your packing list in the worksheet.
  • Transportation Tips: Nothing is worse than stopping at a red light only to hear water slosh out of a toppled centerpiece. Instant rage. Here are some tips to avoid this:
    • Temporarily Pour Out Water: Tipping a vase slightly to pour out a bit of water will prevent car spillage. IMPORTANT: Remember to refill at the venue.
    • Buckle ’em Up: For large ceremony urns, we recommend buckling them up as if they are a friendly passenger. Pull the seat belt out all the way and secure in place, this engages the locking mechanism. (If you’re a parent, you know all about this.)
    • Crowding Is Good: When flowers and arrangements are closely nestled together, the less chance they have of toppling over and getting damaged. Crowd them closely to prevent tip-overs. Be cautious of smashing any delicate blooms.
    • Be Careful of Wind and Carts:  If you live in a windy state, then you may want to forego using a venue’s carts when bringing in your wedding flowers. Being from Oklahoma, where the wind comes whipping down the plains, I have lost many centerpieces by trying to carry too much in at once. If it’s windy or bad weather, carrying them in one-by-one is the safest bet. This is also a good reminder to tape in all of your mechanics!

  • Post-Wedding Cleanup & Relocating Blooms:
    • Take ’em Home and Continue to Enjoy: Pretend you’re Marie Antoinette and scatter them around your house if you’re not planning an immediate honeymoon.
    • Pass Them Out To Guests: If you’ve opted for less pricey vases, like our plastic resin vases, then you may want to offer them to your favorite people or your flower helpers!
    • Donate: Nursing homes, retirement facilities, and hospitals that would LOVE your donations for their residents! Just check with the facility in advance.

  • DIY Etiquette Tips: Let my past mistakes guide you in the right direction and leave all vendors and helpers loving your forevermore.
    • Don't task your wedding planner with floral/decor setup. You'll want them focusing on the flow of the day!
    • Let your wedding planner know that you are the florist. Assign someone not in your wedding party to be your day-of contact for all things floral. Give their number to your wedding planner.
    • Be sure to leave a few extra flowers and greenery (if you have leftovers) for your cake, caterer, and photographer!
    • If you have a florist helping with other arrangements, tell them you're planning to DIY. Breaking contracts can be a toughie day-of!
    • Have snacks and dranks for your helpers.
    • Don't ask someone to be in two places at once. For example, your dad can't oversee setup while also taking father/daughter pics. Make sure your helpers' schedules align with your timeline!
    • Send thank you notes. Your helpers are just happy to be there for you and a simple note goes a long way.
    • Tag your helpers and vendors in wedding pics on your socials. Brag, baby, brag!
    • This isn’t the Big Flower Fight, calm down, it will all come together!
